Traveling by train emits
3–10 times less CO₂ than by car or air
(UIC)
vs
Rail represents only
1% of global
transport emissions
But carries
~7% of passenger-km and
6% of freight-km (IEA, 2024)
In Europe, rail accounts for
8.1% of passenger transport
and
16.6% of freight
(European Commission, 2022)
Spain: a model in sustainable rail infrastructure

Spain is a crucial member of the TEN-T program, linking the Mediterranean and Atlantic corridors.
SPANISH COMPANIES OPERATE IN
EXAMPLES
Spain: where its the Key?
Spain's high-speed rail network features state-of-the-art stations
designed to handle the high passenger flow characteristic of
high-speed travel. Notable examples include Madrid Puerta de Atocha, Barcelona Sants, and
Seville Santa Justa.
The diversity of Spain's high-
speed train fleet is testament to
its technological ambition. The
fleet includes models from
leading manufacturers around the world, such as Siemens, Alstom,
Bombardier, CAF and Talgo.
The design and operation of Spain's high-speed rail
network is governed by the Technical Specifications
for Interoperability (TSI), ensuring compatibility,
safety and efficiency across the entire interoperable
rail network in Europe.
Spain: Future
Process digitalisation using technologies such as AI, Big Data, IoT and smart maintenance, which enable cost reduction, fault anticipation and increased reliability.
Spanish railways have the potential to become the backbone of sustainable mobility
in Europe. However, according to the report, this requires greater public-private
collaboration; more flexibility in public procurement and price reviews; priority
investment in freight and interoperability; and real support for internationalisation
with tailored financial instruments.
The Spanish railway industry has positioned itself as a global benchmark. One of the key
characteristics of the Spanish railway industry is its clear commitment to research and
innovation (4% of turnover is invested in R&D) and technological development.
